Modern English Spelling

Spelling has seen many transitions and times. The formative period of “Modern English Spelling” was from the late 15th century to the reign of Queen Anne. William Caxton in England (1422-1491) printed manuscripts. Spelling achieved uniformity in a large measure in the 16th century. The movement towards uniformity in a spelling gained momentum during the 17th century.

Types of Spelling

Spelling may be of three main types. They are i) Phonetic(sound), ii)Ideographic(Idea) and iii)Mixed(sound and idea). The spelling of words first depended on pronunciation. Pronunciation changes with no corresponding change in writing. English spelling hardened more and more after the introduction of printing. The changes between Chaucer’s time and that of William Shakespeare are referred to as the “Great Vowel Shift”.
