Do Not Install Halo 3 on the Xbox 360 Hard Drive

One of the main elements included in the New Xbox Experience, which has just launched for all the users of the Xbox 360 gaming console from Microsoft, is the ability to install parts of a game on the hard drive of the device, if you have one of the two models with an internal storage solution. The idea was to reduce load times for players and limit the disk access which leads some of the Xbox 360 consoles to sound like aircraft ready to take off.

That title is Halo 3, the best selling first person shooter from Bungie, exclusive to the Microsoft platform. Engineer Mat Noguchi made a post on the Bungie forums, spotted by Joystiq, in which he basically said that the game could be loading significantly slower if a hard drive install was performed. The problem is that Halo 3 was created so that “if a HDD is present, we copy maps from the DVD to the utility partition on the HDD” so “even if Halo 3 is already installed on the HDD, it will still copy maps to the utility partition”, which could result in a lot of hard drive activity slowing down the console.

NVIDIA Updates GeForce 180 Drivers - Download Available

Santa Clara, California-based graphics manufacturer NVIDIA has just updated its GeForce drivers with the release of the 180.48 version. The new WHQL-certified driver has been designed for the company's GeForce 200-series, 9-series and 8800-series of desktop graphics processors. With the new release, NVIDIA enables several performance improvements in numerous 3D applications, including some of the latest gaming titles on the market. According to the release notes made available by NVIDIA, the new GeForce drivers are to enable X58-based motherboards to support the multi-graphics SLI technology, which can improve graphics performance by the addition of a new GeForce card. Shanghai Tested: Both Performance and Power Enhancements Spotted

We've mentioned this morning that today is the big day for AMD's Shanghai server chip, and we return to the product now to announce the first benchmark test results. As said before, Advanced Micro Devices launched nine flavors of the new chip, all in the 75W area. The already announced new features and technology enhancements the chip comes with have been proved in testing to do what they were meant to do from the beginning: the chip delivers more performance than its predecessors and runs even better than Intel's Xeons. AMD previously said that the new quad-core Opteron would be more power efficient than its Barcelona chip, and early benchmarking shows exactly this. The Shanghai chip is able to offer a 7W power reduction when idling compared to Barcelona, yet the difference rises up to 49W when side by side with a Xeon CPU. The gain over the predecessor is of only 6 percent, but it jumps considerably to 56 percent when compared to an eight DIMM Intel system and to 30 percent when sided to a four DIMM Intel system.

DICE is announcing having released the long named Battlefield: Bad Company Community Choice Pack on Xbox Live. The pack is free to download and is basically made up of four single player maps that have been adapted by the company to be playable in multiplayer.

Two of the maps themselves were picked through a vote of the people that actually play Battlefield: Bad Company online and the maps are the very interesting Par For the Course and Acta Non Verba. DICE reserved the right to also pick two maps for single players and also adapted Crossing Over and Ghost Town so that multiplayer matches scale to the map.

Battlefield: Bad Company was released by Electronic Arts and DICE during summer and became a somewhat unlikely hit.
